  • Professional Guide to EPDM Cold Shrink Tubes

    Q1: What is a Cold Shrink Tube, and how does it differ from Heat Shrink?

    A: A cold shrink tube is an open-ended, tubular rubber sleeve that is factory-expanded onto a removable plastic support core. Unlike heat shrink, which requires a torch or heat gun, cold shrink installs by simply pulling out the support core, allowing the tube to contract naturally due to its "elastic memory". This eliminates fire hazards and ensures a constant radial pressure seal that adapts to the cable's thermal expansion and contraction.

    Q2: EPDM vs. Silicone Cold Shrink: Which material should I choose?

    A: Selection depends on your environment:
    • EPDM is the "outdoor specialist," offering superior resistance to punctures, UV rays, and acids at a better price point, making it ideal for 5G base stations and PV plants.
    • Silicone Rubber is the "performance insurance" choice, featuring an ultra-wide temperature range (-60°C to 200°C) and higher flexibility for extreme heat or high-vibration machinery.
     

    Q3: Why is EPDM the preferred solution for 1kV cable sealing?

    A: For low-voltage applications (1kV and below), the main threat is moisture ingress and seal degradation. EPDM provides a high dielectric strength (≥15kV/mm) and maintains a tight, waterproof seal in underground and wet environments. Its robust physical properties effectively reduce failure risks caused by aging or gaps in the seal.

    Q4: How do I calculate the correct size for a cold shrink tube?

    A: Successful selection follows the "2/3 Rule":
    1. Expansion Diameter: The expanded inner diameter of the support tube should be large enough so that 2/3 of its capacity exceeds the maximum diameter of the cable joint.
    2. Recovery Diameter: The fully shrunk inner diameter must be smaller than the minimum outer diameter of the cable to ensure a tight, gap-free fit.
     

    Q5: How much length should I allow for proper sealing?

    A: To ensure an unbroken seal, the tube must fully cover the joint and overlap the cable sheath by 20–50mm on both sides. Since the tube may shorten slightly during contraction, it is recommended to add a 5%–10% length margin during selection.

    Q6: Can EPDM Cold Shrink Tubes be used for underground burial?

    A: Yes. EPDM is highly suitable for underground laying because it offers excellent resistance to moisture, salt spray, and chemical corrosion. Its high tear strength (≥25kN/m) protects the cable from mechanical damage during soil shifting or backfilling.
